Since September 2026, Grand River Friendship Society (GRFS) has been welcoming students to its Football for Learning education sessions, offering free academic support for children and youth from Grades 1 to 12.
The program, supported by the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, combines education and sports, giving students opportunities to learn both in the classroom and on the field.
Learning in the Classroom and Online
Every Thursday, students meet at Forest Heights Collegiate Institute in Kitchener, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Online sessions provide additional learning opportunities throughout the week.
With the help of teachers, assistant teachers, and volunteers, students work on Mathematics, English, Literacy, Science, and ESL. Lessons include grade-level exercises, worksheets, and homework support, with time for students to ask questions and practise skills they find challenging.
Learning with IXL
IXL is another part of the education program, giving students opportunities to practise Mathematics and English independently and at their own pace.
Meanwhile, the education team is preparing grade-specific assessments for Grades 1–8 to better understand students’ learning needs and plan appropriate classroom support.
As the fall term continues, Thursday classes and online learning remain central to the program. GRFS appreciates the time and effort of the teachers, volunteers, and families who help keep these sessions running each week.
Football for Learning is proudly supported by the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.
