The GRFS University of Waterloo campus visit gave mentorship students an opportunity to experience university life, explore academic pathways, and imagine their future possibilities.
Exploring Academic Programs and Facilities
The educational visit began at the William M. Tatham Centre, where students participated in simultaneous faculty tours. Seven students, accompanied by one chaperone, explored the Faculty of Engineering, while six students and one chaperone visited the Faculty of Health.
During the faculty tours, students explored engineering buildings and laboratories, health facilities, lecture halls, and learning spaces. They gained valuable insight into university programs, academic environments, and the many ways classroom learning connects with research, innovation, health, and future careers.
The full group of 13 students and two chaperones later joined a broader campus tour. Participants visited several important areas, including the Earth Sciences Museum, Quantum-Nano Centre, student services, lecture halls, and other University of Waterloo landmarks.
Discovering Future Education Pathways
Throughout the GRFS University of Waterloo campus visit, students had opportunities to ask questions, learn about available programs and resources, and gain a clearer understanding of the university experience.
Educational visits like this are an important part of the GRFS mentorship approach. They help young people build confidence, expand their awareness of post-secondary opportunities, develop academic goals, and connect their interests with future education and career pathways.
By seeing learning spaces firsthand and speaking with university representatives, students can picture themselves in new environments and make more informed decisions about their next steps. The experience also encouraged curiosity, independence, and meaningful conversations about academic preparation and career exploration.
