Journey of Resilience: Film Screening and Community Discussion Brings Immigrant Women Together

October 19, 20260

On October 9, 2026, Grand River Friendship Society (GRFS) brought together immigrant women for a special screening of Journey of Resilience, followed by a meaningful community discussion with filmmaker Great Osa-Oni.

The gathering provided a welcoming space for participants to reflect on their migration journeys, share personal experiences, and connect with others who have navigated the challenges and opportunities of building a new life in Canada.

Sharing Stories of Resilience and Belonging

Every migration journey carries unique stories of courage, adaptation, challenges, and personal growth.

Through the film screening and the conversation that followed, participants explored themes of culture shock, resilience, identity, and belonging. The discussion encouraged women to reflect on their experiences while recognizing the strength and determination that often accompany the process of settling into a new community.

One of the most meaningful moments of the gathering came when participants were invited to complete the sentence:

“Migration has taught me…”

Their reflections highlighted the diversity of individual journeys while revealing shared experiences of change, perseverance, and personal discovery.

The activity created an opportunity for participants to express themselves, listen to one another, and build connections through mutual understanding.

Strengthening Community Through Dialogue

At GRFS, we believe that sharing personal stories and creating opportunities for meaningful dialogue can help foster understanding, inclusion, and a stronger sense of belonging.

Events such as Journey of Resilience demonstrate the value of bringing people together in welcoming environments where diverse experiences are heard, respected, and appreciated.

GRFS extends its sincere appreciation to the Region of Waterloo and Immigration Partnership for their collaboration, to filmmaker Great Osa-Oni for joining the conversation, and to all participants who contributed their experiences and reflections.

Different journeys, shared experiences, and meaningful connections remind us that community grows stronger when we take the time to listen to one another.

Through cultural exchange, community engagement, and educational initiatives, Grand River Friendship Society remains committed to fostering friendship, inclusion, and mutual understanding across Waterloo Region.
