GRFS Mentors Attend Mentor Convention 2026 in Ottawa

October 29, 20260

On October 10–11, 2026, 18 women mentors from Grand River Friendship Society (GRFS) attended Mentor Convention 2026 in Ottawa. Organized by Northern Lights Educational Services (NLES), the two-day gathering brought together 96 participants from different cities to exchange experiences, share best practices, and explore practical approaches to youth mentorship.

The convention offered mentors an opportunity to discuss the everyday responsibilities and challenges that come with supporting young people. Sessions focused on developing positive mentor–mentee relationships, establishing healthy boundaries, strengthening communication skills, and maintaining effective communication with parents.

Learning from Shared Experiences

One of the central themes of the gathering was the importance of learning from one another. Participants shared their experiences, discussed common challenges, and considered different approaches to situations mentors may encounter in their work.

The discussions also highlighted an important aspect of mentorship: being a mentor does not mean having all the answers. Listening carefully, setting clear expectations, and remaining open to learning are essential parts of building supportive relationships with young people and their families.

For GRFS mentors, the convention provided a valuable opportunity to step outside their regular activities, hear perspectives from other communities, and reflect on their own mentorship practices.

At GRFS, mentorship is an important part of supporting youth development and creating environments where young people feel welcomed, heard, and encouraged. Opportunities for mentors to continue learning help support this ongoing work.

GRFS extends its sincere appreciation to Northern Lights Educational Services for organizing the convention and bringing participants together. We also thank our 18 participating mentors for their time, dedication, and willingness to learn and share their experiences.

Supporting young people also means continuing to grow as mentors.
