Grand River Friendship Society (GRFS) is helping make artificial intelligence and data science education more accessible to children and youth through AI Explorers+, an innovative educational initiative delivered under The Algorhythm with financial support from Scale AI.
As artificial intelligence continues to transform education, workplaces, and everyday life, understanding emerging technologies is becoming increasingly important for the next generation. Yet many young people, particularly those from underserved communities, face barriers to accessing quality STEM education and hands-on technology learning opportunities.
Through AI Explorers+: National Youth Access to Data Science, GRFS aims to help bridge this gap by introducing young learners to the exciting world of artificial intelligence in an inclusive, engaging, and supportive environment.
Making AI Education Accessible to Every Young Learner
Designed for children and youth aged 7–17, AI Explorers+ offers free, beginner-friendly learning opportunities that encourage curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and responsible technology use.
The project aims to reach more than 1,200 students across Kitchener, Waterloo, Baden, Cambridge, and Guelph, with particular attention to newcomer families, low-income households, racialized communities, and young people who may have limited access to specialized STEM education.
By removing financial barriers and providing age-appropriate learning experiences, GRFS seeks to ensure that a young person’s background or circumstances do not limit their opportunity to explore emerging technologies.
No previous coding or artificial intelligence experience is required.
Learning Through Exploration, Creativity, and Innovation
AI Explorers+ goes beyond traditional classroom instruction by introducing students to artificial intelligence through practical, interactive activities.
The program’s six learning areas include:
- Introduction to Artificial Intelligence: Understanding how AI works and how it influences everyday life.
- Machine Learning and Coding: Exploring tools such as Scratch and Teachable Machine through creative activities.
- Data Visualization: Learning how information can be collected, interpreted, and presented.
- AI Ethics and Responsible Technology: Discussing fairness, privacy, bias, safety, and the social impact of artificial intelligence.
- STEM Career Exploration: Discovering educational and career pathways connected to emerging technologies.
- Student Projects and Demonstrations: Applying new knowledge through hands-on activities and presentations.
Through these learning experiences, students are encouraged not only to understand technology but also to ask questions, solve problems, and consider how innovation can contribute positively to society.
Bringing Learning Opportunities into the Community
One of the distinguishing features of AI Explorers+ is its flexible approach to education.
The program combines in-person workshops, online learning opportunities, mentorship, interactive demonstrations, and student-led activities.
By connecting AI education with existing youth programs, schools, and community learning environments, GRFS aims to reach students who might otherwise have limited opportunities to explore artificial intelligence and data science.
This community-based approach reflects GRFS’s broader commitment to educational accessibility, inclusion, and lifelong learning.
Preparing Young People for a Changing World
AI Explorers+ is about more than developing technical skills.
The initiative seeks to help young people become confident, informed, and responsible participants in an increasingly digital society.
By introducing artificial intelligence at an early age, GRFS hopes to inspire greater interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics while strengthening essential skills such as creativity, collaboration, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
The program also emphasizes the responsible use of technology, encouraging students to consider how artificial intelligence can affect people, communities, and society.
Supported by Scale AI
AI Explorers+ is delivered by Grand River Friendship Society through The Algorhythm, with financial support from Scale AI under its STEM Youth Awareness Program.
This investment supports GRFS’s efforts to expand accessible AI and data science learning opportunities for young people from diverse backgrounds.
GRFS extends its sincere appreciation to Scale AI for supporting initiatives that help inspire the next generation of learners, innovators, and future STEM professionals.
We also recognize the contributions of educators, mentors, volunteers, and community partners who help make inclusive learning opportunities possible.
Building a Future of Opportunity Through Education
At Grand River Friendship Society, we believe that education creates opportunities, strengthens communities, and empowers young people to discover their potential.
AI Explorers+ reflects this commitment by making emerging technologies more approachable, encouraging curiosity, and creating pathways for young people to explore new possibilities.
Every child deserves the opportunity to learn, discover, and help shape the future—regardless of their background or circumstances.
Through AI Explorers+, GRFS continues working toward a future where technology education is more accessible, inclusive, and empowering for the next generation.
