GRFS Sports Academy is a community-based sports initiative operated by Grand River Friendship Society. The Academy creates safe, welcoming and affordable opportunities for children and youth who may face financial, social, cultural or accessibility barriers to participating in organized sports.
Our programs prioritize newcomers, children and youth from low-income households, girls, youth with disabilities and families with limited access to recreational opportunities. Participants are welcomed regardless of their experience, ability or athletic performance. No tryouts or performance-based selection processes are required.
GRFS Sports Academy uses sport as a tool to promote physical health, confidence, social connection, belonging and personal development. Our focus is not elite competition. We help children and youth participate, learn fundamental skills, build friendships and enjoy positive experiences in a supportive environment.
Programs are offered free of charge or at a low cost whenever possible. Financial circumstances should not prevent a young person from participating in sport.

GRFS Sports Academy plans to provide beginner-friendly and recreational programming in:
Programs may include weekly recreational sessions, introductory clinics, seasonal camps, community tournaments and family-oriented sports activities. Activities will be adapted to participants’ ages, abilities and accessibility needs.
The cost of sports equipment can prevent children and youth from participating. GRFS Sports Academy is developing an equipment lending system that will allow eligible participants to borrow essential sports equipment during programs.
Through grants, sponsorships and community donations, the Academy aims to provide equipment such as sticks, balls, protective gear, training materials and other program supplies.

GRFS Sports Academy is committed to reducing barriers to participation. Depending on available resources and program needs, accessibility measures may include:
Families are encouraged to inform us of any accessibility, cultural or individual support needs during registration.
Youth leaders and volunteer coaches receive guidance and training in safe, inclusive and participant-centred coaching. Training priorities include:
All programs will follow the safeguarding, supervision and risk-management requirements established by Grand River Friendship Society and applicable sport organizations.

Through accessible sports programming, GRFS Sports Academy aims to:
Program participation, accessibility supports, participant feedback and community outcomes will be documented to support continuous improvement and responsible grant reporting.
GRFS Sports Academy welcomes collaboration with schools, municipalities, sport organizations, community groups, foundations, businesses and individual supporters.
Grant funding, sponsorships and in-kind contributions help us provide subsidized registration, qualified instruction, equipment, accessible programming, volunteer training and safe recreational opportunities for children and youth.
