Walking Hockey

A Free 9-Week Community Wellness Project by GRFS

The Neighbourhood Connections Through Sport initiative is a unique Walking Hockey project designed and hosted by Grand River Friendship Society. Over the course of 9 weeks, we invite local seniors and individuals with mobility challenges to participate in low-impact, team-based walking hockey sessions that support healthy aging, social inclusion, and neighbourhood connection.

Our sessions take place weekly on our accessible community grounds and are completely free of charge, including equipment and refreshments.

What to Expect?
  • Post-Game Social Circles

  • Neighbourhood Friendship Cup

  • Open Community Days

  • Youth Volunteers & Mentors

No previous hockey experience is required. All equipment is provided, and each session is designed to be low-impact, inclusive, and enjoyable. With the support of youth volunteers, post-session tea and conversations, and monthly community events, Walking Hockey offers more than just physical activity.

It fosters meaningful friendships, encourages healthy aging, and helps participants feel a stronger sense of belonging.
