On May 10, 2025, the African Canadian Association of the Waterloo Region Area (ACAWRA) and the Grand River Friendship Society (GRFS) came together to celebrate Mother’s Day with heartfelt purpose. This collaborative event honoured the unwavering strength, compassion, and resilience of mothers across cultures.
The afternoon opened with a warm welcome from Mamuzo Nwokoro of ACAWRA, followed by an inspiring address from GRFS Board Member Zehranur Shashal. The emotional heart of the event was a powerful talk by Oore Onun titled “Mom, Breathe!”—a reflective presentation on mental wellness and self-care for mothers. The program was enriched by music, community sharing, meaningful gifts, and light refreshments. We were especially grateful for the presence of MP Bardish Chagger, whose support and kind words added depth to the celebration.
At GRFS, we believe that love lives in the everyday moments—offering a seat, sharing a story, or simply listening with care. This celebration reminded us that mothers embody love in action. Their resilience uplifts families, their care shapes communities, and their voices deserve to be heard and honoured.
