Grand River Friendship Society was delighted to visit the African Canadian Association of Waterloo Region and Area during their vibrant summer school program. Together with our 55+ seniors, we introduced hand-knitting to the children — a joyful and creative experience that sparked curiosity and excitement!

From handmade bracelets to colorful necklaces, the kids embraced the art of finger knitting with energy and pride. It was heartwarming to watch generations come together — learning, sharing, and laughing side by side. Our seniors played a key role, guiding the little hands with patience and care.

When we teach with kindness, create with purpose, and connect across generations, love becomes something you can feel — in every thread, smile, and shared moment. That’s why at GRFS, we say: Love is a Verb.

When children come together across cultures, something beautiful happens — they learn acceptance, build friendships, and grow with empathy. This special visit from over 50 children with the African Canadian Association of Waterloo Region and Area (ACAWRA) @acawra_ highlights the power of inclusive and preventive programming.

It’s more than a visit — it’s a step toward a stronger, safer, and more connected community.

Our Summer School students had the joy of welcoming over 50 guests from ACAWRA for a day full of fun, laughter, and learning. From creative classroom activities to outdoor games, the day fostered new friendships, intercultural understanding, and mutual respect.

Programs like this are more than just summer fun — they help reduce social isolation, build resilience, and empower youth to thrive. These positive experiences are crucial in nurturing healthy mental development and reducing long-term risk factors related to youth violence and exclusion.

At GRFS, we know that love isn’t just something you feel — it’s something you do. When we open our doors and hearts to others, we create ripples of kindness that can shape a lifetime.
Love is a Verb — and this visit was a shining example.

Today is about embracing our shared home and the people who make it so special. At Grand River Friendship Society, we’re proud to celebrate the cultures, communities, and connections that shape Canada’s identity.

Love lives in every kind act, every effort to understand, and every step we take together. On this day of national pride, we remember that real love for country means showing up for each other. Because at GRFS, we know that Love is a Verb.

June 27 is Canadian Multiculturalism Day — a time to honour the cultures, traditions, and communities that make Canada so vibrant. It’s a celebration of the unique stories, languages, and heritage that shape our collective identity. At the Grand River Friendship Society, we recognize the strength that comes from diversity and the beauty of coming together in unity.

When we embrace one another’s differences with open hearts, we put love into action. At GRFS, we believe that love is more than a feeling — it’s what we do. Celebrating diversity, showing kindness, and building bridges between cultures is how we live this message every day.

Juneteenth is a special day that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. It is also called Freedom Day or Emancipation Day. Every year on this day, we remember their strength, courage, and the long journey toward fairness and equality. Juneteenth reminds us how far we’ve come—and that there is still more work to do for justice.

We commemorated Juneteenth by reflecting on the strength of the African diaspora and the importance of continuing the journey toward justice. Through educational visuals, shared stories, and open dialogue, our community came together to recognize history and honour the enduring spirit of liberation.

Love means action—and standing with those who continue to fight for dignity, equity, and human rights. At Grand River Friendship Society, we show our love by listening, learning, and acting to dismantle racism and build a more just world for everyone.

Yesterday, the Grand River Friendship Society family came together for an unforgettable Eid al-Adha gathering filled with warmth, connection, and celebration. With nearly 400 guests in attendance, the day began with a generous breakfast that reflected the spirit of friendship and unity. Our vibrant fruit stand added a burst of colour and sweetness to a morning where hearts met around a shared table.

The most anticipated moment for children—the giving of traditional holiday gifts—was made even more special as they received their bayram envelopes from respected elders, GRFS board members, advisory member Mr. Leon, and Green Party MPP Ms.Aislinn. Her heartfelt Eid wishes deeply touched our community.

Following breakfast, joy overflowed as children enjoyed cotton candy, ice cream, cascading fruit from the “Viko Lots” fountain, relay games, and playful competitions. Every detail created moments of joy and lasting memories.

But yesterday wasn’t just about celebration—it was about reunion. It was a vibrant expression of gratitude and shared happiness. The gathering painted a picture of the GRFS mission in action: touching every heart, building bridges, and carrying hope forward.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants, volunteers, and contributors who made this beautiful day possible.

At GRFS, we believe love is more than a word—it’s what we do. Love is a Verb.

Eid is a beautiful reminder to reflect, give thanks, and extend kindness to those around us. It is a time to come together in spirit, even when we are apart — to pray, help others, and hold on to hope through life’s challenges. As M. Fethullah Gülen reminds us, “Even in hard times, we keep hope and do good.”

At Grand River Friendship Society, we celebrate Eid through joyful visits, shared breakfasts, warm greetings, and heartfelt reflections that bring our community closer together. We embrace the spirit of the holiday by uplifting one another, spreading goodwill, and sharing in the joy of compassion.

Through acts of service, kindness, and connection — especially when no one is watching — we show that love is more than a feeling. It’s what we do. This Eid, we carry that message forward, with gratitude in our hearts and kindness in our actions.

Victoria Day, observed on May 19th, is a cherished Canadian holiday honouring the birth of Queen Victoria. It marks the unofficial beginning of summer and serves as a time for reflection on our shared heritage, unity, and the values that shape our communities. At Grand River Friendship Society, we embrace this day as a chance to celebrate the cultural fabric that weaves us together.

This year, our celebration was filled with vibrant Canadian spirit—symbolized by maple leaves, fireworks, and a deep sense of togetherness. Though not marked with a specific event, the message we share through this day resonates with the warmth and pride we feel for our nation and its diverse people.

As we wave our flags and gather in gratitude, Victoria Day reminds us that community isn’t just a place—it’s something we create through kindness, service, and action. At GRFS, we believe Love is a Verb, and every moment of unity is an opportunity to show it.
