On Sunday, March 8, we had the pleasure of welcoming our guests from Grassroots Response to the Ukrainian Crisis. We were honored to host residents from two guest houses in New Hamburg and Guelph for a warm and meaningful evening together.

Sharing dinner, stories, and moments of connection, we also marked International Women’s Day in a heartfelt way. It was a beautiful collaboration that reminded us how powerful solidarity can be—especially when women come together to support, uplift, and stand beside one another.

Across cultures and experiences, we are stronger when we share our journeys and help each other heal. On this International Women’s Day, we celebrate the resilience, courage, and kindness of women everywhere.

On Thursday night, the 22nd of January, as Grand River Friendship Society, we had the pleasure of visiting one of the guest houses of Grassroots Response of Ukrainian Crisis.

We were warmly welcomed and had the opportunity to spend a lovely evening together, sharing dinner and getting to know one another. It was a truly friendly and heartfelt gathering — a dinner of connection, friendship, and mutual understanding. We were especially happy to meet the three families living in the house and to listen to their stories.

We are deeply grateful for the wonderful hospitality we received. A special thank you to Svitlana for preparing such delicious food for us — it truly meant a lot.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Alona Riznyk from the Support Team for thoughtfully arranging this evening and making this meaningful gathering possible.
We also sincerely thank Iryna from the Support Team for her care, attention, and kindness throughout our visit.

Meeting each and every one of them made us feel incredibly lucky. We look forward to continuing this friendship and hope to see each other again very soon.

In honor of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, our seniors from the Grand River Friendship Society visited the Métis Nation of Ontario in Kitchener. Together with Jaclyn Austin, Coordinator of the Métis Healthy Babies Healthy Children Program, we prepared and delivered special gift bags for Indigenous Métis babies—carrying the message that Every Child Matters.

Each package included a cozy baby blanket, an orange shirt made specially for mothers, a baby onesie, hand-knitted baby socks, handmade bibs, and small lavender sachets—lovingly prepared by our seniors.

We’re grateful to stand in solidarity, to share kindness across communities, and to remember that the future of all children deserves love, dignity, and hope. At GRFS, service turns compassion into movement—that’s why we say: Love is a Verb. ????

This event was organized as part of the New Horizons for Seniors Program (NHSP)-supported Project CARES (Community Activities for Resilient, Engaged Seniors), aiming to encourage older adults to actively engage in social issues.

May 1st marks Labour Day—an important day to recognize and appreciate the hardworking individuals whose daily efforts build, sustain, and uplift our communities. From frontline workers to educators, tradespeople, and caregivers, every role plays a vital part in shaping a stronger, more compassionate society.

Today, we reflected on the dignity of work and the shared values of fairness, equity, and respect in all labour. We acknowledged the many workers—past and present—whose contributions have moved our communities forward and continue to inspire the next generation.

Labour is more than a job—it’s an act of love for our families, our neighbours, and our future. At Grand River Friendship Society, we celebrate this truth every day, because love isn’t just what we say—it’s what we build together.
