On Sunday, June 21, Grand River Friendship Society hosted a joyful and vibrant Turkish Food Festival, welcoming guests from many different cultures, communities, and backgrounds.

Throughout the day, visitors came together to enjoy the warm atmosphere, connect with one another, and experience the spirit of community through food, friendship, and shared moments. The festival created a beautiful space where people of all ages could gather, celebrate, and feel a sense of belonging.

Children added special energy to the day as they played soccer, enjoyed the open space, and shared cheerful moments with friends and families. The program also included meaningful Father’s Day activities, making the day even more special for families who joined us.

More than a festival, this gathering became a celebration of togetherness, cultural connection, family, and community spirit. It was inspiring to see people from different backgrounds come together, share smiles, build friendships, and enjoy a welcoming community environment.

GRFS sincerely thanks all guests, families, volunteers, and community members who contributed to making this event such a memorable and uplifting day.

At Grand River Friendship Society, we are proud to create spaces where culture, friendship, family, and community come together.

The Unifying Power of Football in Waterloo Region

As football fans around the world followed the excitement of the FIFA World Cup, Grand River Friendship Society was pleased to share this special moment with community members in Waterloo Region.

As a proud FIFA Education Fund grantee, GRFS hosted an outdoor big-screen watch gathering for the Türkiye vs Australia FIFA World Cup group match. Under a beautiful summer night sky, participants came together to enjoy the excitement, energy, and community spirit of the game.

Throughout the match, emotions rose, anticipation grew, and football fans followed every moment with great interest. The game showcased strong competition, tactical discipline, and the passion that makes football a truly global sport.

Australia won the match 2–0, but the real winner of the night was friendship, togetherness, and the universal spirit of sport that brings people together.

This gathering was more than a match screening. It became a meaningful community event where people of different ages came together, strengthened connections, shared excitement, and enjoyed a memorable evening in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

We sincerely thank everyone who joined us for this special night. We look forward to coming together again at future community events.

A Meaningful Gathering for Youth & Community

We were delighted to welcome our valued guests from the Belmont Village Bestival team — one of Waterloo Region’s most vibrant arts and culture events — at Grand River Friendship Society.

During a warm and friendly breakfast, we had the pleasure of connecting with Jo Goossens and Tammy Lawrence. It was a wonderful opportunity to get to know one another and have a meaningful conversation about youth volunteer engagement for the upcoming September 2026 festival.

For us, the greatest impact comes from supporting youth to grow as active, responsible individuals who contribute to their communities through arts, culture, and service. This gathering marked a strong and inspiring step toward strengthening youth leadership, belonging, and community involvement.

We truly believe that stronger communities are built by young people who lead with purpose and heart. We are excited to see our youth contribute their energy and passion at Bestival this September.

At the Grand River Friendship Society, we believe that every celebration is a chance to strengthen the bonds that bring us together — and Halloween is no exception!

Tonight, as our neighbourhoods come alive with costumes, creativity, and laughter, let’s remember that the true magic of this season lies not in the candy or the costumes, but in the connections we share. Whether it’s a smile exchanged at the door, a warm “Happy Halloween!” to a child, or a moment of kindness between strangers — these are the little sparks that light up our community.

Halloween reminds us that even in the spookiest nights, friendship and compassion shine the brightest. At GRFS, we continue to create safe, inclusive spaces where everyone — children, youth, families, and newcomers — can feel welcome, supported, and valued. Together, we make our community stronger, one small act of kindness at a time.

Wishing you all a safe, fun, and heartwarming Halloween filled with laughter, love, and just the right amount of magic!

On March 6th, our iftar table was filled with joy, laughter, and the bright energy of our youngest guests—preschool and elementary school children. With the warm hospitality of their teachers and dedicated high school volunteers, every detail was carefully planned to make this iftar an unforgettable experience for them. The beautifully decorated tables, thoughtful gift bags, and the excitement of sharing this moment with their friends made the night even more special.

After iftar, we came together for evening prayers, embracing the spirit of unity. Then, the children got to enjoy a traditional Hacivat & Karagöz shadow play, a cherished part of our Ramadan culture, bringing history and laughter together.

A heartfelt thank you to Gönül, Sümeyye, Nuray, and Zerrin for their efforts, as well as to the high school volunteers who made this night so magical. And, of course, a huge appreciation to the families who took the time to bring their children to this special gathering.

May the blessings of Ramadan continue to bring us together in love and kindness—because love is a verb, and we live it through our actions.
