On National Indigenous Peoples Day, Grand River Friendship Society honours the histories, cultures, languages, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

This day is an important opportunity to recognize the richness and diversity of Indigenous cultures, while also reflecting on the importance of listening, learning, respect, and reconciliation.

At GRFS, we believe that building stronger communities begins with understanding one another’s stories, acknowledging the past, and walking forward with humility, care, and shared responsibility.

We remain committed to fostering respect, inclusion, cultural understanding, and meaningful community connection.

Today and every day, we honour Indigenous Peoples and their enduring presence, knowledge, resilience, and contributions.

A Meaningful Gathering for Youth & Community

We were delighted to welcome our valued guests from the Belmont Village Bestival team — one of Waterloo Region’s most vibrant arts and culture events — at Grand River Friendship Society.

During a warm and friendly breakfast, we had the pleasure of connecting with Jo Goossens and Tammy Lawrence. It was a wonderful opportunity to get to know one another and have a meaningful conversation about youth volunteer engagement for the upcoming September 2026 festival.

For us, the greatest impact comes from supporting youth to grow as active, responsible individuals who contribute to their communities through arts, culture, and service. This gathering marked a strong and inspiring step toward strengthening youth leadership, belonging, and community involvement.

We truly believe that stronger communities are built by young people who lead with purpose and heart. We are excited to see our youth contribute their energy and passion at Bestival this September.

We hosted a fun snow sculpture competition for our Grade 8 students. Some of our youth formed teams and worked together, while others chose to create their own designs independently.

The creativity was amazing — one team built a snow mosque, and one student even recreated a Clash Royale game map in the snow!

It was a joyful, laughter-filled winter activity that brought everyone together through teamwork, imagination, and community spirit.

On Friday evening, November 28, we had the pleasure of attending the Indigenous and Newcomers Gathering program at Victoria Park Pavilion, hosted by the inspiring healer, Hope Engel.

As part of her meaningful collage workshop, we learned how art can help us understand, address, and gently heal the wounds we carry within ourselves. Through this creative process, we discovered new ways to release past difficulties and embrace emotional healing.

We are deeply grateful to Hope Engel and her colleague Flora for welcoming us into this beautiful program. It was truly special for us to be a part of their work, and we look forward to following and supporting their future initiatives.

Thank you for creating such a powerful and heart-opening experience.

Today, we joined the City of Kitchener’s Remembrance Day Ceremony, standing together in gratitude and reflection. One of the speakers said something that touched us deeply — “Remembrance should be comprehensive.”

We carry this message with us — remembering not only the soldiers who served and sacrificed, but also the families, communities, and generations shaped by their courage.

We are grateful to be part of this country and this shared moment of remembrance.
Thank you to all veterans and fallen heroes who have given so much for peace.

Our new season has begun!

Each month, we explore womanhood through one film, podcast, and article — diving deep into themes of identity, creativity, and transformation.

For our October gathering, we discussed Women, Identity & Dreams through the film Julie & Julia. Inspired by Elizabeth Gilbert’s The Curiosity-Driven Life podcast, we explored the difference between passion and curiosity, and reflected on how modern life shapes women’s paths of self-actualization.

The space was beautifully decorated in the spirit of the film — warm, cozy, and filled with vintage kitchen touches that brought Julie’s story to life.

We ended the night with beautiful insights from our participants:

“When we keep walking our path even when those we admire don’t appreciate us, that’s a real story of growth.”

“As women, when we truly listen to our inner voice, we discover our real passion and live our true selves.”
